In 1976, Sikorsky won a competitive contract to develop a versatile tactical transport helicopter, known as the UH-60 Black Hawk (designated as the Sikorsky S-70). The UH-60A, the first military series variant, was introduced to the U.S. Army in 1979. This single-rotor helicopter features a four-blade rotor that can withstand hits from 23 mm caliber rounds. Its crew cabin and floor are protected by Kevlar plates, and it has a redundant hydraulic system for improved survivability on the battlefield. The onboard equipment includes a radar warning system, infrared countermeasures, and thermal decoy dispensers. The spacious troop compartment can accommodate up to 10 fully-equipped soldiers or 6 wounded on stretchers.
