The Challenger 2 MBT, developed by Vickers Defence Systems as an upgrade to the Challenger 1, has seen 386 units ordered by the British Army with deliveries from 1994 to 2000. Oman has also ordered 18 of these tanks. The introduction of Challenger 2 will phase out the remaining Chieftain and Challenger 1 tanks in British service. While its exterior resembles the Challenger 1, the Challenger 2 features significant enhancements, including a new turret equipped with a 120mm L30 rifled tank gun firing advanced APFSDS-T rounds. It also boasts a computerized fire control system, electric gun controls, and stabilized sights for improved accuracy day and night. Standard features include a thermal camera shared by gunner and commander, an NBC protection system, and mounting points for extra fuel drums and a Combat Dozer Blade.
