The A-4 Skyhawk was created by Douglas after the U.S. Navy requested a jet-powered attack aircraft to replace the outdated A-1 Skyraider. By prioritizing size, weight, and complexity, Douglas produced an aircraft that was only half the weight specified by the Navy. Its compact wing eliminated the need for folding during carrier storage. The A-4E model boasts a new Pratt & Whitney J52-P-6A engine with 8,400 pounds of thrust, a reinforced airframe with two additional weapon pylons (for a total of five), and improved avionics including TACAN, Doppler navigation radar, radar altimeter, toss-bombing computer, and AJB-3A low-altitude bombing system. Many were later upgraded with a J52-P-8 engine with 9,300 pounds of thrust. In total, 499 were produced.
