The F-14 was developed in the 1970s to 80s by Grumman to meet the U.S. Navy’s need for a two-seat supersonic multipurpose carrier-based fighter, replacing the F-4 naval fighter. It played a key role in fleet air defense, attack, combat, and reconnaissance missions. The F-14A, the first production model, saw 585 units built by 1985. During the 1970s, Iran’s Pahlavi government ordered 79 F-14As to counter Soviet MiG-25 incursions, making Iran the only country to export the American F-14. Although retired by the U.S. military in 2006, Iran remains the sole operator of this model today.
