First ordered in 1934 and entering service in 1937, the Douglas TBD Devastator was a cutting-edge torpedo bomber for the United States Navy. Despite being considered one of the most advanced aircraft of its time, the rapid progression of airplane technology soon surpassed it. By the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the TBD was already obsolete. While it had some successes in earlier battles, it suffered major losses in the Battle of Midway and was quickly replaced by the Grumman TBF Avenger.
