The U-2 was constructed in utmost confidentiality by Kelly Johnson and the Lockheed Skunk Works. Its inaugural flight occurred in August 1955, and subsequent missions over the USSR throughout the late 1950s yielded crucial information for the United States government. In October 1962, the U-2 captured photographic evidence of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, sparking the Cuban Missile Crisis.
