The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is an upgraded, larger version of the F/A-18C/D Hornet. Originating from the 1980s Hornet 2000 concept by McDonnell Douglas, it features a longer fuselage and bigger wings for increased fuel capacity and enhanced power. Its fuselage is extended by 860 mm, and wing area is expanded by 25%, while using 42% fewer structural parts than the earlier Hornet. Powered by the General Electric F414 engine, which delivers 35% more thrust, the Super Hornet can return to carriers carrying significantly more unused fuel and weapons—known as "bringback"—exceeding 9,000 pounds. It first flew in 1995, entered full production in 1997, and has been in U.S. Navy service since 1999, replacing the F-14 Tomcat by 2006.
