Description

Item No: 48360.

In 1968, the US Army awarded contracts to multiple companies to research and develop a versatile tactical transport helicopter for use in amphibious operations and cargo delivery. This project, called UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Air System), had specific requirements that included a three-person crew, the ability to carry 11-15 soldiers, a twin-engine power plant, and the capacity to fit inside transport aircraft. From the nine designs submitted, the U.S. Department of Defense chose Boeing-Vertol and Sikorsky as the final two contenders. Following thorough testing, Sikorsky was declared the winner of the UTTAS program in 1976. A contract was then signed for the production of the initial batch of helicopters, designated as UH-60A Black Hawks (part of the Sikorsky S-70 series).
