The M55 Self-Propelled Howitzer is a 1950s American design built using many shared parts from the M46 and M47 Patton tanks, common in Cold War U.S. forces. While similar to the earlier M53 armed with a 155mm gun, the M55 featured a larger 203.2mm M47 howitzer, which limited how much ammunition it could carry due to the heavier shells. Produced by Pacific Car & Foundry in the 1950s, many M53 units were upgraded to this model. Some M55s saw action during the Vietnam War, though they were later phased out of service.
