The Fairchild C-119 transport-plane was modified to create the famed "flying gunship," which saw use in Vietnam during night missions against Vietcong targets. The AC-119K model boasted two 20mm guns and four 7.62mm mini-guns, providing effective armament against trucks. An additional version, the AC-119G, featured a lighter armament. Two more jet engines were added to the design to permit take-offs from shorter, loaded runways. As the AC-130H entered service, the previous models were gradually passed on to the South Vietnamese air force, which used them until the fall of Saigon.
