Description

Item No: 25426.

The I-400 was an unprecedented submergible aircraft carrier that could launch three Seiran aircraft. With a 122m length, 12m width, and a 6560-ton submerged placement, its size was similar to a destroyer, making it the largest sub of its time. It featured the ability to travel one and a half times around the globe without having to refuel or restock. It could have launched surprise attacks at the U.S. East Coast and the Panama Canal, which was then controlled by Allies. Construction of the I-400 was finished in December 1944. The I-400 and its sister vessel, the I-401, were en route to the U.S. Naval base at Ulithi, but WWII ended before they had a chance to engage in battle. Thanks to its superior design, the I-400 is thought to be the precursor to modern day strategic nuclear missile subs.
