In 1938, the German Army initiated the development of an armored personnel carrier based on the 3-ton half-track (HL-KL-9p). Hanomag Hannoversch Maschinenbau in Hannover was tasked with creating the running gear, while Bussing-NAG in Berlin designed the armored superstructure. A prototype, inspired by existing armored cars, was completed by the end of 1938 and successfully tested at the Kumahsdorf Proving Ground. Approved for mass production, the Hanomag Sdkfz 251/1 became a key vehicle for the German mechanized forces, active across all battlefields during the war.
