In 1944, the German Army worked to enhance the firepower of the Panzerkampfwagen IV, leading to the production of the Panzer IV/70(A). The tank's hull was based on the IV Ausf. J in production at the time and complemented by the fixed fighting compartment with its L/70 7.5 cm long barrel gun found in the IV/70(V) Lang. The Panzer IV/70(A) was also outfitted with stiff wire mesh panels known as Thoma Schürzen. Approximately 280 were produced and saw action on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
