The USS Midway, whose construction started in 1943 and entered service shortly after its 1945 launch and Japan’s surrender, was the first U.S. warship named Midway, honoring the pivotal naval battle that shifted the Pacific War’s momentum. This aircraft carrier took part in key military events such as the Korean War, Vietnam War, Iranian hostage crisis, and Gulf War. It was retired in 1992 and fully decommissioned in 1997. Since 2003, the USS Midway has served as a museum ship in San Diego, preserving its rich history.
